New Zealand vs South Africa Match 25 Predictions | ICC World Cup 2019

New Zealand vs South Africa: Fresh-off a win, South Africa will take on unbeaten New Zealand in the 25th match of the ICC World Cup 2019, in a bid to keep their semi-final hopes strong. South Africa, who hasn’t been in the best of their form this season, overthrew their bad-luck and finally registered their first victory of this tournament. New Zealand, on the other hand, has had one of their best world cup campaigns ever, by consistently performing in every game. They will further look to go one-up against the Proteas in their game at Edgbaston.
This match is also a medium for the Proteas to avenge their defeat in the 2011 World Cup Semi-Final against the Blackcaps. Grant Elliot was New Zealand’s hero, as he hit a maximum and sealed the game for New Zealand, with just 1 ball to spare. Well, though the stakes are quite different now, the case for South Africa remains the same, as a win in this game will still keep them afloat in this tournament to qualify for the semis.

UNBEATEN NEW ZEALAND:

New Zealand is one of the only two teams in the world cup which has remained unbeaten in the tournament yet, along with India. The match between India and New Zealand was highly anticipated, just to see who would be victorious and cast their dominance over others. However, sadly, that fixture was washed out and that still remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the Blackcaps are in an incredible form. They have excelled from all corners of the game by consistent performances in batting, bowling and fielding. Though their batting has been good, their middle-order hasn’t been able to deliver it to the team. They will look to redeem themselves in this game.
South Africa has a had a pretty disappointing run at the world cup this year. The team, led by Faf du Plessis, was witness to three consecutive defeats in their first three games. However, they bounced back to action and won their first match against Afghanistan, which is currently at the bottom of the table. The South African needs to retrospect and make the right decisions in terms of team selection and get more victories. Else, neither the fans nor the cricket fraternity would be happy to realise

HEAD-TO-HEAD:

Although the current form favours the Kiwis in this contest, against South Africa, it is the Proteas who were a dominant side in the majority of all games between the 2 nations. South Africa faced New Zealand 70 times, with New Zealand winning a mere 24 games while losing a majority of 41 games. In England, the teams faced each other once, and it was the Proteas who clinched a victory.

WEATHER REPORT:

The weather has been playing a constant villainous role throughout the ongoing tournament. 4 games washed out completely and multiple other games had to be shortened owing to the weather. The game between New Zealand and South Africa will be no exception. The weather report forecasts a possible wash off of the game. The downpour may start as early as 9 AM and may continue till the end of the day. The clouds are going to dominate the skies, hiding the sun behind their thick cover. The temperature will be hovering around 12 to 15 degrees Celsius mark. As the day progresses, the humidity will come down.

PITCH REPORT:

The pitch at Edgbaston in Birmingham is a tricky one. The history has no vital stats that can help the teams decide whether to bat first or chase, on winning the toss. Out of 51 ODIs played at this ground, 24 were won by the team, batting first. Going by the stats of games in the ongoing World Cup tournament, the average score recorded at the venue stands at 295. The pitch has been favouring the team batting second, and hence, the team winning the toss may elect to field first.

PLAYING COMBINATIONS:

New Zealand:

New Zealand team have been an enviable form. They would want to continue with their winning mixture from their previous game. The openers Colin Munro and Martin Guptill have been struggling to provide their team a good start. While Munro managed to put a meagre 22 off 24, Guptill went out for a duck. The duo will have to put on a good show early on, to reduce the pressure off the lower order. Kane Williamson has brought stability to his team with his consistent run-getting. However, his runs are coming at the cost of too many balls; strike rate is the area Kane will look to improve on. The lower strike-rate of Williamson is compensated by hard-hitting from Ross Taylor, who has scored runs at a strike-rate of 90.9.
For Kiwis, the bowling department provides a lot of room for improvement. Tom Latham and Trent Boult haven’t been able to deliver to their full capacity. However, Lockie Ferguson and Neesham have been able to create fear in the hearts of the opposition, through their ferocious bowling. Colin de Grandhomme and Mitchell Santner make for the much-needed all-rounders in the lineup.
Probable XI: Colin Munro, Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson (C), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (wk), James Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult

South Africa:

The Proteas haven’t had a great tournament so far. They won their first point, thanks to the rain deities. Hence, it may not be surprising if the South African team experiment with their playing side in the coming games. The first change that the team management will consider is to bring back Lungi Ngidi into the playing eleven. He may most likely replace Beuran Hendricks. Ngidi, who developed a hamstring injury during the match versus Bangladesh, has recovered completely. Hashim Amla, who failed on 3 occasions, finally managed to score an unbeaten 41 in the previous match.
However, he scored runs at a meagre strike rate of 49. Quinton de Kock has been the star batsman for the Proteas. He has scored 186 runs so far, at an average of 46.50. In the bowling department, Imran Tahir continues to be in his IPL form. He has been the leading wicket-taker for the South African team, with eight wickets in the games so far. Andile Phehlukwayo and Chris Morris have been able to support Tahir with decent bowling. Kagiso Rabada has picked up five wickets so far, however, knowing the kind of damage he can do, he is yet to find his best form.
Probable XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Hashim Amla, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (C), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, Lungi Ngidi
